A natural environment is core to the character of Grosse Ile. It is:
- encompassed by the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge;
- along the Detroit Heritage River Water Trail;
- a participant Community in the Downriver Linked Greenways Initiative.
Greenways and Open Space

The distinct natural beauty of the eleven islands that comprise Grosse Ile includes river and lake frontage, marshlands, forests, canals, and Open Space preserved for future generations.
Grosse Ile's citizen-subsidized Open Space Program has invested over $12,000,000 in well-over 500 acres of property since it's inception almost two decades ago.
An expanding system of greenways link natural areas with neighborhoods and commercial districts through trails and bike paths.
