“About 61.8 million people, or 26.4% of the population, volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2007 and September 2008,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. (1) more ...
Over the years I’ve met many outstanding people. People who have dedicated their lives to making this world better than they found it. In anyone’s book their names would be listed in the “Hero” chapter. Many are living right here in Grosse Ile, MI.
In the days and weeks ahead you’ll be hearing their stories in the Island Stories section of this website. I’m sure you’ll find them as inspirational as I have.
These Island people are among the reasons I’ve become a member of Opportunity Grosse Ile, our nonprofit organization, which the people, businesses and institutions of our community have established. They are the heroes of our past and present.
Still, I have found an even more compelling reason to be a member of OPPGI — the young people of our community; those with us today and those yet to join us tomorrow.
Will they have the opportunity to live in this beautiful place? Go to school with their friends in one of the best school systems in the state? Or, raise their families in relative safety and security?
Will they be able to just enjoy their lives as we have?
When I was a younger person, my father and mother would have said, “You Bet!
But, today, unless we actively take part in ensuring a resounding, “YES!” answer to those questions, our children’s future will remain in the shadow of both our parent’s and our own lives.
Opportunity Grosse Ile has given me the means to help turn the clouds away from Grosse Ile. To bring the sunlight home once again by empowering us all to make a difference today — for our children.

About the Opportunity Grosse Ile Logo
In the first documented case since the 1890s, a pair of ospreys successfully nested near the Gibraltar Wetlands Unit of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, next to Grosse Ile. We chose to include the osprey in our logo because it's return to the area is a clear sign of environmental renewal. Go here for story >>>
